The 1981 oil painting "Wind Chimes"
was inspired by a dream. I originally sketched the image in
pencil, and then decided to experiment with oils. This was
my first oil painting, and I completed the work in one night.
I hated the painting because I felt it didn't capture what
I felt in my dream. After a week or so of looking at it, I
put the painting in the curbside trash. My sister happened
by right after I had thrown it away and "saved"
it. She told me that she was going to keep the painting until
I could come to appreciate it. Over the years I did and it
became one of my favorite pieces. Just a reminder to all of
us - sometimes we are so hard on ourselves that our perspectives
are completely unrealistic.
In the dream the woman was playing her lute
in the moonlight. It was a warm night and the wind was sweet
and gentle. The tree was full of fragrant blossoms. In the
distance, she heard the sound of wind chimes... Hence the
name "Wind Chimes."
