how hand-printed cards and bookmarks are made:

  • A design is drawn by the artist using a pen or a pencil.
  • The design is then transferred to a linoleum block or an acrylic panel.
  • The design is cut into the linoleum using an exacto knife and other such tools, or it is scratched into the acrylic panel with a sharp tool.
  • Watercolor, oil or other paints are applied to the linoleum block or the acrylic panel, and usually smoothed over with a roller.
  • If a linoleum block is used, it is pressed onto the paper. If an acrylic panel is used, the paper and acrylic panel are run through a manual drill press.
  • Further touchups might be added, such as additional washes of watercolor or pencils.
