Armstrong Geneology

Armstrong Family Coat of ArmsFamily Motto: "Invictus Maneo"
(We remain unvanquished)

Gaelic name - Mac Ghillielaidir

From Liddesdale, throughout the Borders

An old legend identifies Fairburn as the first Armstrong ancestor. Fairburn was an armour bearer to a Scottish king. During a battle Fairburn rescued the monarch. To show his appreciation, the king changed his name to "strong arm" and gave him land.

If you're related to us, then you're also related to William the Lion, and Alexander 'De Mormaer' II and III, Kings of Scotland:

  • Alexander III, 1241 - 1286 (King of Scotland from 1249 - 1286): Son and successor of Alexander II. He married the daughter of Henry III of England. Later he would quarrel with England's royalty over old English claims to overlordship in Scotland. Alexander's great achievement as King of Scotland was his final acquisition for Scotland of the Hebrides and of the Isle of Man, which his father had already claimed from Norway.

  • Alexander II, 1198 - 1249 (King of Scotland from 1214 - 1249): Son and successor of William the Lion. He joined the English barons in their revolt against King John of England in 1215.

Our line begins with Duncan Thane Of-Dule.

Edward 'Of Terwinney' Armstrong was born around 1604 in Gilnocke, Scotland. He migrated to Terwinney, Fermanagh Co. Ireland and married Ellen Corry.
